When my wife brought home a few Redbox movies and gave me a quick run down of what Ma was about, i was less than optimistic to say the least. Another jump scare, intense background noise, lack of originality horror movie was to be my Saturday evening of this i was certain. However as Octavia Spencer (Ma) took the screen shortly into the film, all doubts that this wasn't pure gold went straight out the window. She loads this movie right up on her back and carry's it home with style and grace. Never has a character been brought to life in such a beautifully horrific way since Kathy Bates in the classic knee buckler Misery! Her character is supported with excellence along the way by Diana Silvers who plays Maggie, a familiar character to all horror films as the innocent, moral compass steering, trying to fit in, new girl but the pure originality and flow to the film as a whole allows for a unfamiliar sense to a character forever necessary to the beauty that is horror.. Needless to say, shes fantastic.
