The first Slasher addition to the genre of superhero films, Brightburn avoids fun kills and titillating nudity for serious and unnerving murder perpetrated by an alternate universe, Superman. The film is a great example of how modern storytelling can be supplemented by cultural osmosis. In other words, the audience doesn't need to ask why our villain can shoot eye lasers. I don't think this form of meta exposition makes for a good narrative device but Brightburn was gutwrenching and entertaining. Loved it.
