It is a very slow burn and some things are not explained.
I liked that because I believe the point of the movie is to take us to the place where we can imagine our phones going off, unexplained phenomenon due to information blackout and the severe distress that will cause. As with all good sci fi, the plot asks us to consider whom we each accept as human and whom we each will be willing to help in a crisis.
A profound scene for me was Ethan Hawk and the non English speaking woman.
I am very distressed that in the low star reviews , people seemed to repeat negatives about the Obamas... given a main theme of the movie was whom will we treat as human enough to save- the fact that folks are calling out the Obamas specifically seems racially motivated to me. I am sad that should a climate catastrophe or terrorist attack occur, people will not look at character and will instead judge on culture.
A final note- this movie did get me thinking about how those in war torn countries feel. Who do they feel they can trust? Can we learn about survival from some of them? Can we learn about reaching out to others when all is chaos?
Not a fun movie. Definitely not as tight or quick as Get Out (another sci fi horror flick), but worth a watch if you like to think about what disater/ Armageddon type stuff
