I was really excited to watch this movie as a kid who grew up playing with a collection of Barbie dolls. I really liked that this movie sheds light on feminism and how it is in todays world. There were quite a few funny moments through out the movie that were done in a tasteful and clever way. However, there were a some questions I was left with after watching the movie. For example:
Why was Barbie not in love with Ken? I get the independent woman standpoint but you can still be an independent woman with a partner, whoever you choose.
I enjoyed some of the movie and some of it I didn’t. This movie was playful and comedic but at some points I felt like it was almost making fun of feminism. Maybe that’s just me ?
Because Barbie was made out to be so “air headed” through out parts of the movie when she was talking about how women have equal rights now, it felt mocking as a woman. Maybe it was just more playful to lighten the mood of a heavy topic, that interpretation is up to the audience members.
Overall, this definitely isn’t a kid movie because it has a deeper plot than you would think. I enjoyed the sets of the movie and the costumes, the amount of detail was beautiful. The Barbie dream houses were amazing!
A lot of the acting was interesting and I kind of left feeling unsatisfied. I would give it a higher rating had it not felt a little mocking, being a woman.
If this movie really peaks your interest, I would definitely go watch it so you can form your own opinion. This is definitely a movie I wouldn’t watch again but am glad I did because it gave me stuff to think about and left enough room to interpretation!
