I loved Chip & Dale in their original appearances and in the original Rescue Rangers. They are actually my favorite Disney characters! However, this movie doesn't do them justice. It just makes them actors in their previous works so they don't have to adhere to their iconic characteristics. Why did we need them to have normal human voices instead of sounding more like their original selves? I love John Mulaney, he's hilarious and I enjoy Andy Samberg... I just don't like them in these roles. This is just not Chip & Dale to me. They seem to have wanted to make new Roger Rabbit style movie (and Roger Rabbit does make a brief cameo in this film) but Roger Rabbit worked, in my opinion because he wasn't an existing character, he was an original character. This version of Chip & Dale is just not for me.
The story itself is ... ummm... okay, but not great. I feel like they are trying to play on my nostalgia for Chip & Dale as opposed to actually making a good film. Sure the film has plenty of comedic moments but it's a movie we really didn't need and in my opinion, is a disservice to both the characters and their fans. I'd rather have an actual Chip & Dale (as I remember them) type movie than this.
I also didn't care for Dale's 3D makeover of the fact that they animated most of the cartoon characters in 3D and then just used a 2D drawn skin to make them look more like their original animations. I don't hate this movie but it just wasn't necessary and isn't worth it. If you never fell in love with the original characters or the original chip & dale... you'll probably enjoy this. If you already liked Chip & Dale... you'll probably have more of a love-hate relationship with this film.
