It's an excellent show and certainly has a love for Tolkien's legendarium, but it plays really fast and loose with canon. If you have not watched the show yet, just know in advance that it just really ignored most of everything Tolkien or his son wrote about the Second Age. Personally, I don't have a big problem with this, but I feel like the filmmakers kinda lied to everyone when they said "Oh it's very faithful, don't worry" and then changed virtually everything important. If they had just been honest up front that it was largely non-canonical, most Tolkien fans would probably have just appreciated the honesty and said "ok sure, go for it" but they hyped this up as being so faithful and "oh the Tolkien estate tightly controlled everything." Nah....they didn't. So, that lie to the public is annoying, but I can't stay too mad because the show is pretty good, really well made, and clearly made by people who care, they just played too many games with wanting to "surprise" viewers. Second season will probably be much better because now we know for sure that all bets are off and this is basically fan-fiction, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
