Art is always an object of fascination to anthropologists because it reflects the psychological, political, social, and philosophical states of the group in study. This movie to me, is a perfect reflection on those four areas not because it advances an agenda per se but because it’s a comedy and the philosophical groundwork for it is never questioned. For example, in multiple scenes and lines in the movie, we see the rejection of our culture to commit to a romantic relationship properly. In a particular scene, a girl is called by a guy her “partner”. What? On a similar note, we can see our culture’s attitude towards career success and family. When the parents are talking together, they make fun of a mother who decided to fully take care of her kids at the expense of her career. Sunny’s wife does not know her own kids because she’s so busy building a career. What does this say about how we view kids? Armando’s “family” is a tortoise; that’s such a flawed understanding of what family is.
Huck represents what we as post-freudian people experience, the inner desires are put above our duties and responsibilities as members of a society.
All of this to say, this movie was a great display of the future (and current) state of our culture if we keep following the Nietczhean way of life and reject that which is true, good, and beautiful.
