I was browsing the documentary section of HBO pretty soon after I saw the film Just Mercy starring Michael B. Jordan. I recognized Bryan Stevenson's name and clicked on it, and found myself experiencing something both informative and empathetic. It lays out a narrative about where the current state of the US criminal justice system sits in between slavery, the Civil Rights movement, and what's to come in the future. It displays facts and specific cases that Bryan has worked on. It also included scenes from his Ted Talk or other activities and speeches he's engaged in more recently. They were able to effectively deliver the spirit of Bryan's work, which is very much a great balance of calling out what needs to improve, without being blaming. Ultimately it left me feeling hopeful and grateful for Bryan and those who work with him. Perhaps things will continue to get better and become more just.
