Hey everyone! Just got back from the movie tonight!
So, just wanted to help wage war against the critics, while also being honest (as an ASD typically does.)
First of all, when they say "plot is thin," this is accurate... mostly. My main problem throughout the movie was the fact that there were many jumps between where there could have been exposition, and instead right to another moment of action.
However, I want to point out that the second post-credit (yes, there are two... the fabled two of any start to a universe) does bring a direct connection back to the Mario Brothers should a second movie be greenlit, and Nintendo is obviously being extremely cautious with making this movie after the last disaster.
So, plot is thin, but there's also a good possibility that, should the series be allowed to expand, and have room to take off, that this gap will be filled instead of having a Pokemon Gold-esque fly-or-die setup. And there are some points in the film that are good for plot, including some details about Peach.
As for fun... absolutely! It's fun, and there is so much attention to detail. Despite only joining Nintendo with the Wii and DSi, there was so much to see and it was absolutely gorgeous, and the way it was presented was fun as well.
And the music is amazing as well. I'm probably going to get the soundtrack, not going to lie. Call me crazy if you want.
But, yeah. 5 stars from me.
Suspend the critics reviews; they always want what isn't there; and have fun. If you're worried about plot, look at the movie itself before watching it and decide if you want a second movie to fill in the holes, or if you just want to argue about the holes and leave them open.
That's my opinion, anyway.
See you at the theaters!
