I tried last night to contact the Newshour to express my condolences to all who were friends of Mark Shields. Perhaps, I was fortunate not to make contact then because I have now just finished watching your remembrance and tribute to Mark. What a magnificent person he was: a wise and incisive commentator on world affairs and American politics, a congenial discussant who could state his view without disparaging another person's view; a genuine lover of America and its ideals. God, will he be missed; may his endemic love of democracy and country never be lost or forgotten. Thank you for doing such a wonderful, heart-felt commemoration of him. May his spirit continue to motivate the finest news program on television.
