I’ve always thought RDJ was a fantastic actor, and from what little I’ve assumed from a few personal appearances on tv, I greatly admire his integrity. But wow. Yes, I also appreciate RD, VD, BT, etc, but RDJ brought it all together. Real life and real families are complex and often have to hold competing things in the same hand at the same time. You could see it all - all of that tension - in his performance, and he took me right along with him. He took excellent material and multiplied it to exponential advantage. And his anti-vanity was a wonderful foil for the judge’s vanity. There are far too many things to mention than I can list in a review, I’m just overwhelmed at where to start. This is way more than “kid goes home for funeral and all hell breaks loose” (and granted, most of those fail). One of my fav movies ever.
