I have to speak out about the segment today on the hormone replacement therapy article. Sunday Morning failed to fully address the problem of the pregnant mare urine used to make Premarin. I’m in no way an expert but I have read and seen videos on the horses used for this. The statement about how simple it is to get the urine by keeping the mares pregnant completely failed to mention that the foals of those pregnant mares are thrown out at birth and not even allowed to nurse. This was done with no regard for the foals lives as a commercial enterprise by greedy Pharmaceutical companies. There are rescues for some of the babies but not all. They kept the mares confined like caged hens with a Foley catheter inserted and the mares live tortured lives by not being allowed to move for years. Horses can live for decades unlike chickens. And the sheer weight of the animal makes standing in one spot painful. Shame on the writers for promoting this without telling the whole story about this product.
