Beautifully made film with excellent sound track...but Over sentimental and self consciously nostalgic.....doesn't quite ring true..and really not gritty enough. I have the feeling that it was made with the US market in mind. Just a little too cosy and 'heart warming'......the horrors we're only sketchily portrayed and the reality of working class life in the sixties was never this sanitised. However I enjoyed it on its own terms. A good film but not a great one...

30 minutes in and main response is that film is implausible and clichéd... Dollar bills in London seemed a little odd....! Am sticking with it in the hopes of decent scenery...! Will post again at end, if I get that far..

I understand the medical criticisms that have been levelled against this film.....but one has to 'suspend disbelief' in order to get at a deeper emotional truth. And this is certainly what this film does...with incredibly steering and subtle writing and performances. As a study of grief it is entirely credible and heart rending. As a nuanced study of marital and familial relationships....and an exploration of morality in the face of a need to blame, it is refreshingly honest and dies not shy away from the reality of pain.
