The Artful Debbie

Oh dear, sadly not much to like in this slow and predictable tale. At first glance the list of actresses/actors is impressive but Stephen Rea is barely in it and there’s not much chemistry between leads. Casting is strange - Bates is supposed to be ages with Linney but looks decades older. In fact Linney looked out of place to me through the whole film. Her character also caves in to others, despite their hideous behaviour, without even a ‘hang on there just a minute’ which was pointless. In fact, I’d say this whole movie is pointless - choose something else to do on a rainy afternoon instead!

This is an excellent piece of television. Moving and compelling, it highlights the misogynistic culture of the time as well as racism and bias in the system. The acting is superb as is the period detail. Sensitively handled and informative, I hope this wins TV awards for they’re involved in its creation.
