I am a huge Ghost fan, and saw them life in 2023 around September a few weeks before this was filmed.
The stage performance is hands down one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed on and off screen, music is the best, costumes amazing, etc. They've had enough time to perfect every aspect of their performance.
I rated this really low not because of the quality, but the post production seemed cheap and misguided to the point of nearly ruining the whole experience. The writing had ups and downs, I think the intro was fabulous, it was a bit of an info dump, but very fitting, very sci-fi/action inspired. I loved the Hannah Barbara inspired 1950s animation, the story, emotions, the journey was all done without a word of explanation. I wish the whole film would have shown us more than telling us, we have been hearing "Nothing ever lasts forever" and "This is the end" for a while, we get it. Too much time was spent walking us through that concept. On stage and off. Alot of direct explanation about the lore rather than natural conversation. These people have history and it seems like they've only just met.
It feels like we've been stuck in phase PAPA 4 longer than marvel had us stuck in phase 4. You've explicitly told us exactly what was going to happen and it did, yet we still haven't gotten anything new in the way of story. I get frustrated occasionally with the Gorillaz level potential of this band, but every mini episode, lore drop, and puzzle is treated like a joke. Satire is fun, until nothing is taken seriously, we want the content to get on our level in a way. I love everything about this concept, performance, and artistic direction. But it has untapped potential.
I mentioned the editing earlier, but it was almost ruining the show. Jumping rapidly from ghoul, to papa, to ghoul, to crowd, to ghoul, every five seconds was really overdoing it when the live show itself is gorgeous and doesn't need any choppy editing to keep everyone entertained.
I think if given another chance they could do better but I think they need to improve the writing/lore and editing. The funny faux mouth papa nhil had made me chuckle, I don't expect perfection on a budget, but I do think the basics could be a lot better.
