Brilliant writing, linklater at his finest yet again. Hawke and delpy dive straight into their characters and are such a perfect fit in terms of both acting and appearance that the spell is not broken on the audience(for myself atleast) until the credits roll. There is no overbearing and overdramatic soundtrack attempting to dictate to you as the audience what path your feelings should take. Instead the magic of the film is in the writing and the acting. Both jesse and celine reconnect and revive an emotional bond, the character development is brilliant in how both characters manage to engage in verbal fencing one moment then feigning and withdrawing back into a casual relaxed air of conversation the next moment. The ending being without the expected cliffhanger, instead it is dawned upon the audience as to what has happened and what the future may hold for the two. I highly recommend this film to anyone as a fan of cinema art.

I watched this film and in doing so I was left wondering how much left there is. I am a big fan of realism in movies and I believe realism in language, acting and overall style help the viewer enter into the narrative sufficiently to feel immersed within the storyline. The general disposition of this film is lacking realism and does not adequately portray the brutal reality of life as a prisoner in war. WW2 prisoner of war camps were far from the luxury shown in the film which resembled more of a boot camp than a real internment camp. Bruce Willis' talking back to the German guards in the way he did would have in reality gotten him severely beaten if not killed. Overall the film is a Hollywood portrayal and in no way does it seem to be attempting to be an accurate portrayal of the life of those times.
