Perfection. As a painter, I’d just cottoned on to the power of chiaroscuro in black and white movies to provide strength of tone as a foundation for a painting. Im jettisoning my ‘Brief Encounter’ stills for my memories of the cinematography of this series. I haven’t seen the Hollywood version, but I thoroughly enjoyed every single supporting actor’s contribution to Ripley’s (alternating) sense that he was in control or that he was about to be rumbled. Brilliantly directed, written, filmed, edited and theatrical in the very best sense.
