As a video game, it's a great introduction for new players into RPGs.
*Spolier Alert*
The narrative became more lineal, since it's following what we left inconclusive in DA Inquisition. Because of that, we have our heroes trying to stop elven gods from ancient times. It's not bad, but it's very easy to predict what might happen. This gives it a "casual" air, in comparison with DA Inquisition and Origins.
The combat mechanics are way more easy to master, but it can be very explosive and frenetic. Since DA is an RPG, but with open words, and a combat mechanic a little bit more complex, some players might find it "easy". It is easy, but easy doesn't mean "bad". It's more casual.
Characters focus more in "what's inside me and how I'm interacting with the outside world", instead of becoming mindless heroes. They act more like humans, yet we're playing a fantasy game. That's why for some people this can be "bad". Personally, I find it dramatic, even immersive, since I feel we are doing an introspection but from people we don't even know. We cover topics such as feeling like an outcast, feeling betrayed by those we call "family" (blood related), and such. It's so nice and refreshing. It's the first time I encounter something like this in a video game of AAA company, at least in a very explicit way. That's the reason you don't feel like the typical hero that will sacrifice mindlessly for a world they don't even know. This reminds me of books, more than classic games. And that's why the game feels in between an RPG and a graphic novel. Both kind of games are nice. So, this DA is more for a casual player, because the game itself ain't that bad.
The graphics are beautiful, as are the places. I love the fact that this time you can visit the cities in a deeper way than in previous titles. The architecture and places feel so real to Thedas's cultures! This is a new "air" for the franchise. Yet, again, people were expecting an open world to explore for hours. I mean, we have that in previous DA games, and so I understand why we could have expected that. Yet, the game is providing with a new perspective. Perhaps hardcore fans of DA will feel bad or betrayed, but as a game, The Veilguard is not a scam.
There are a lot of new options to create our avatar, but there is a line that we have to follow. We are the "good guy", no matter which option we are selecting. It looks that way. It's not bad, but it would have been interesting to actually give more serious options. But again, it's more casual.
Overall, the game is good. It's not a "half-done" game, like other titles that charge way too much money for something that isn't functional. The story is very simple, like most classic games: you are the hero. You have to save the world from evil (elven gods). That's it. For me it feels very classic, like old RPGs. It's a title for "new gamers", to be honest. But I really have enjoyed it so far.
Totally recommend it for new gamers that are looking for a good RPG, not too difficult and with an enjoyable story. For those that we have played the DA old games, this game is way too simple. Better playing it as a different game, more like an spinoff.
