I loved it! The backdrop of the french revolution was a perfect setting, and such a lovely calling card to many of the vampire myths that Castlevania was originally inspired by! Vampires in books like Dracula, Carmila, the Vampyre (whose titular Vampire Ruthvan got a namedrop in the series!) felt really honored by the way that they focused on the symbolism in those books by focusing on a cultural touchstone like the French Revolution. Our villain, based on Elizabeth Bathory, and her amazing refreshed companion of Drolta. It's not a redo of the games, and I think that's more than fine; if you want to play the games, play the games; they're not going anywhere just because the show did them differently. The additions and work that they did in the original show worked so well that I'm super happy to see where things go. I've seen people upset that they've changed the characters and stories of the female characters, but, like, they did that with Sypha and it /worked/. Changing Isaac and Hector made them SO much more compelling, as well as what they did with Carmilla and making her a villain in her own right, worthy of her book reference.
Obviously I loved the original series, but I'm super excited to see where they're taking this. The dynamic we got with Sypha and Trevor so quickly wasn't quite there yet with Annette and Richter in my opinion, but that could just be me looking back fondly over the four seasons we had. However, I found Richter's bond with Annette lovely, as well as his relationship with her mother, Tara. I also was thrilled at Olrox, Edouard, Mizrak. Fascinating expansions upon vampiric lore and just as I was absolutely fascinated by what Isaac and Dracula had going on, and Lenore and Hector ended up doing, I'm deeply intrigued by the relationship forming between Mizrak and Olrox.
I hope we see our remaining vampire wives at some point! Striga and Morana, as well as what became of Isaac's kingdom of Styria. Hopefully we get it and more in Season 2!
