The story of how ex-communist Oppenheimer found himself in a world changing position and how the US government manipulated his reputation afterwards. An all important topic, it goes without saying. Chris Nolan invited all sorts of surprising actors to be in his movie and everyone is great in it. However the invention of the bomb and the pull of certain actors wasn’t enough to for me to give this film more than two stars. I found the endless dialogue hard going. It jumps around, swaps from black and white to colour, and is confusingly tiring to watch. It is much longer and it needs to be - we all agreed it could easily be an hour shorter. It’s as if the director thought he *ought* to make a long one on how Oppenheimer changed the world and how torn up about it he was - but this can be achieved in a much shorter time. Heck if he wanted to go into more depth, why not make a four or five hour film? The cinema was packed where we watched it, and it was an extraordinary feeling leaving our seats in absolute silence. You are guaranteed to leave the cinema exhausted worried and depressed - and probably wishing you’d seen Barbie instead.
