The incredible plight of Native American history is held up for the reader to know in the book's front pages, sparing no horrific, wretched detail. If the reader can pass this test...it's clear that it will be a rough ride. Orange writes with conviction and irony. The characters carry the story and pull you in. He uses the language of the street in a poetic reflection of a decimated culture, basically clinging to survival through self destruction. Although it's tough to keep track of his characters- it's worth it. His writing is excellent. You know it will likely have a Shakespearean ending. Read it!
