Having read all of Richard Harris's books I was prepared for a good read. It started off well, after I had worked out the era of the story. Then after the first few chapters reading became laborious as the story became unbelievable, especially that all records of the past had been obliterated. I knew of the second sleep of our recent ancestors and was waiting for that to have some significance on the story, such as nefarious goings on in the period between sleeps but nothing transpired. The ending didn't really bother me as it could be viewed as open ended. Not in the same league as The Handmaid's Tale.
