Season 1 was really breathtaking; the direction of the cinematography and the raw emotion of the characters, it really felt like you were experiencing this apocalypse with Rick for the first time. Season 2 was intriguing; they made you care and hold your breath. Seasons 3 and 4 kept my interest; the character development of Rick and the others was especially interesting, him being pulled back from the brink of insanity was compelling. Them building their strength and hardening, but also maintaining their humanity was inspiring. In the following season, I actually enjoyed when they were all separated, it sort of brought it back to the original point, but then. Beth. Yeah, that’s all I’m going to say about that. From seasons 6-8, it started to fall off for me, and everyone around me. The writing was sloppy and directionless; they stopped focusing on the main casts’ growth, and they kept introducing characters (trying to make us care about them) only to kill them off a handful of episodes later for shock value. The plot went from surviving the dead to basically, gang terf wars, with the dead as a sort of sometimes-weaponized backdrop. And the whole ordeal with Negan just seemed... out of character. I enjoy the actor himself, he’s charismatic and funny, but the character was.. A murderer and a rapist, and yet he became a fan-favorite and was made to stick around. And eventually became accepted by the group. This group that previously killed people for looking at them wrong (I’m exaggerating here, but really, they’ve killed people for much less). It was just like a bad fanfic, just a straight up mess. In my opinion, the show could have ended at about the 6 season mark and it could have been salvaged, but they kept milking it, and then what could they make of it? After a while just “surviving” wasn’t interesting enough, which I get, but that’s when you pull the plug as the writers. Instead, they got greedy and lazy, and it showed.
