I just stumbled across this sci-fi/fantasy movie on Disney+ and is was AWSOME!
I'd love to see it get more views and have the kickass, brilliant, and resourceful Dejah Thoris be added to the list of Disney princesses worthy of adoration (or at the very least some cosplaying).
For some reason was considered one of Disney's worse flops. Inspit of the last point mentioned below, I find that mind-boggling when it had so much going for it:
✅ Satisfying CGI (even when watching if for the first time in 2023)
✅ A captivating story that was apparently faithful to the Barsoom books (which are considered science fiction classics)
✅ Novel incorporation of the book's author, Edgar Rice Burroughs (who also wrote Tarzan), as John Carter's nephew which was excellently done and had me ROLFing at the end.
❌ Slow/disorienting start (10 min of backstory followed by another 10 min of John Carter on Earth). But it's TOTALLY worth sticking with it until you see him land on Mars and start coping with the low-gravity which has granted him the ability to jump super high and the equivalent of superhuman strength (at least when compared to the locals).
If you haven't watched it yet, please do give it a try 🙏 And if you you have, but just couldn't get through the first 20 minutes, please try it again because I promise it is totally worth it!
