To start off, this movie had several flaws including a butchered origin story for the Redfields. The acting was also very wooden & mediocre at best.
The casting was also very poorly chosen and the characters were all done dirty. For example, fan favourite Leon Kennedy is portrayed as a clumsy, skinny, black haired, hispanic screw-up, basically changing the character completely.
The first third of the movie was just not very good but as the story progressed, it became closer to Resident Evil as we know it.
Aesthetically, it was excellent with the set designs staying very true to the game and the CGI also very well executed. On the flipside, the zombies faces just looked like a cheap Halloween mask.
Mixing both RE1 & RE2, the movie had several Easter eggs and scenes which were transferred directly from both games. While this regained the nostalgia that was craved, it also failed at portraying the horror that was needed.
All in all, I give this a 4.5/10 at best. It wasn't awful after the first half but left me with a bitter aftertaste due to the artistic license taken around the characters, back stories and execution.
The casting was lazy, the acting was wooden and the plot was rushed but it was saved from damnation by the Aesthetics. It wasn't subtle about the easter eggs either and were included as if someone had literally watched a highlights reel with the best scenes from the games and chosen them to attract the fans. Everything around this was very poor and disappointing. It was still closer to the games than the Wes Anderson movies.
