Very disappointing guys unfortunately. Still good fun for fans but not at all what I was expecting and I left unmoved.
The main reason for my lack of enthusiasm for this film is probably the editing. This edit cut almost all the flesh off the bone of the story! Of course the re-enactment of Queen's performances were wonderful and the lead actor impresses as Freddie, especially vocally, but I left the cinema pretty untouched by the experience.
Actually the script was pretty lightweight as well, certainly not great story telling. It lacked grit, reality, and three dimensional characters. In fact, I left knowing little more than I already knew when I entered, so much is glossed over and huge periods of time are jumped. The script is funny in places (but kind of cliched) but there is sooooo much more to their story than you get from this film. They go from nobodies to being the hottest property in the world so quickly in this edit, makes you wonder how much of the story they cut out. Probably the more interesting bits!! The film focused almost entirely on Freddie, and so much more character development and plot was needed! Like Freddies family background central to the man and some of his more complicated relationships.
There was some stuff about his struggle with his sexuality of course and how he lived his life, drugs, men, the hangers on etc but not much. It felt rushed, one dimensional, lacking depth, realism, true grit and emotion. I mean he died of aids and they spent all of ten seconds on that topic. They hinted at the harder topics like his struggle with identity and acceptance and his loneliness and mostly just focused on his singing.
Netflix or someone should really make a tv series and tell whole story properly and do it justice, warts and all so we can actually find out who these people actually were and the real rock and roll stories. This was such a fluff piece. Probably because the band had so much creative control. If I wanted to watch lots of live performances, I would just watch old Queen videos. I was kind of expecting Sid and Nancy and what I got was like a less exciting version of 'Rock Star'. 2.5 stars. A Disney g-rated version of Queen's story. Suitable for the whole family..and maybe that's the point..$$$$
