Richard Osman juxtaposes ridiculously implausible, objectively preposterous story lines, and unlikely escapades, with beautifully relatable, warm and endearing central characters. And, in amongst all the ridiculousness, he describes the most observationally accurate, sensitive and knowing depictions of grief. He somehow manages to reveal moments of individual loss with care and clarity, tempered with equal moments of humour and hope. In amongst the craziness, the common themes are friendship, love and loss. He's literally an observational genius.
