The movie shows the heartbreak of a patriarchal system of Arab Bedouins living in the Israeli-occupied Nevev that allows a man to have plural wives and gives him the power to choose his daughter's spouse against her wishes. However, since the film was written and directed by a Jewish Israeli, one wonders about the motive. Was the film made to make the Arab Bedouin culture look bad? And so perhaps to justify Israeli domination of Arabs in the occupied territories? I would feel better if the film were written & directed by an Arab Bedouin, like the movie "Wadjda," which critiqued Arab oppression of women in Saudi Arabia, but was directed by a Saudi woman.
