It's okay.
Pros. It spices things up a little from the old star trek format, the special effects are nice. Some of the actors are great, with emotional expressive performances. The plot is very we always win, cliché co incidental, bad guys always lose, hero bridge crew forever but at least that's loyal to star trek I suppose..
Cons. A lot of the supporting bridge crew are nobodies, apart from Burnham, Tilly, Saru, Stamets, the Dr, Adira, Gray, and maybe the grumpy engineer everyone else is a nobody.
Burnham - Her character is polarising...she ignores orders and does things her own way, which ultimately ends up being the right way that saves everyone, and everyone who ordered her otherwise looks like an idiot. She's clearly more brilliant than everyone in the room...they might as well make her Admiral and have done with it.
Some of the cast can be annoying. I know the loveable awkward nerd genius thing has been popular since firefly..but there's something about Tilly that rubs me the wrong way, she's irritating.
Saru has developed a bit but he's still a little dull, I do like his character though somehow.
Stamets was better in season 3 yet he also can be a bit whiney at times...I know he contrasts the Dr who is much more likeable and steady...yet sometimes again he can grind my gears, not as much as Tilly.
It needs some better supporting characters, a data, a Tuvok/Spock, 7of9, a worf...someone to contrast all this happy cheesy happy nonsense.
Conclusion, I enjoy it for the most part and have watched every episode. But I do miss some of the cast ingredients that the older Star Trek's managed.
