A fairly simple drama. A young man, Raju, who has had trouble getting past the final part of an engineering exam, takes a job filling in for his father as a liftboy at a posh building somewhere in India. He forms relationships with various people in the building, but none closer than the one with his employer Mrs.D'Souza on the top floor. I have to admit, early on I started to think there were Mrs. Robinson-type motivations behind Mrs. D:Souza's persistent attention towards Raju. But the movie is nothing like that. In fact, instead of The Graduate, the movie takes on more of a Karate Kid type feel.
Maybe 30% of the movie is subtitles. Most of those scenes were the.conversarions between Raju and his parents. Though I felt they should've used subtitles in the scenes with Shawn. His English was a little difficult to pick up. Throughout the movie I kept thinking there would be a romantic development between Raju and Princess. But once again this wasn't that kind of movie. This movie was about career goals, studying hard, generous mentoring, confidence, learning and succeeding.
Oh have some Kleenex towards the end.
You're gonna need it.
