Definitely an independent gem using a surprisingly iconic character actor for the lead. I am a huge fan of Sam's. There are some juxtaposed choices in cinematography that were awkward: classic smooth pan shots to grindhouse-esque action zoom-ins. The Bigfoot side of the story was a bit choppy in storytelling. Plus, they could have cut out maybe one or two SS uniforms and spent the budget on a better zombie-chewbacca costume.
Sam Elliot's character, Calvin, was deep and showed a face of a combat war veteran we usually don't get to see. It was real and telling. Sub-textually then directly, he talks to the error of the glorification of war. Calvin shows the effects of serving in a justified war, but performing the vane tasks. We get to explore the ache of regret; what other would brush off as "sacrifice."
Overall, it is just a fun film worth a chance... and some popcorn.
