As a fan of his aesthetic, being heavily influenced by German Expressionism, characterized by exaggerated backdrops, high color contrasts, and a dreamlike unreality... I can still admit when there are hits and misses with Burton's filmography. Michael Keaton is fun and quirky as always, and Jenna Ortega is a perfect fit for this genre. I think she does really well in these types of roles and she was great in Scream, which I found more entertaining than Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, sadly, because I didn't want to have that mixed reaction that left me thinking "meh".
I gave this movie 3-stars because I felt a tad bored in some parts. It didn't hold my attention as much as films like Sweeney Todd or Sleepy Hollow did. It kind of felt all over the place with too many arcs and that did affect the pacing for me. While Beetlejuice is present, I felt like a show about the titular character would be the main focus. It kept bouncing around with some eternally slow scenes--to a completely random scene with Beetlejuice thrown in for a brief moments of shenanigans. There's way too many plot points being crammed in.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. My biggest positive I took away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was...thank goodness it wasn't Hocus Pocus 2.
