I have read the negative one star reviews on here of Netflix’s One Day, many saying that the film is ‘woke’ and PC for having an Asian woman play the part of Emma. A majority of vitriol is aimed at Ambika Mod being miscast with the excuse of ‘what would a guy like Dexter see in someone like her’. I understand the book itself is very special to many people and when we read any book we all imagine in our heads what the characters would or should look like. But to berate a show for choosing to show diversity only highlights your bigotry. The author David Nicholls himself was deeply involved in this series and gave his blessing for Ambika to play this part. Indeed he has praised both her and Leo Woodall for the talented actors they both are, and how they have convincingly conveyed the inner monologues of their characters.
This is an absolutely beautiful series and so well done as can be seen by the rave reviews garnered worldwide which far outnumber the negative reviews. The production isn’t a schmaltzy sweeping romance but a more subtle, nuanced and grounded story that makes it feel more real and relatable.
This series is one of the best things I’ve seen in years. I’m a fifty year old man who was deliriously swept back to the heady nostalgic days of my twenties. I myself am a Kenyan born Indian and my partner is white Irish born in Belfast during the Troubles. We are both from completely different backgrounds, culturally and socioeconomically, and yet 15 years on we’re still together and very much in love. Sometimes opposites attract and sometimes true love knows no bounds, and in One Day Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall perfectly and endearingly encapsulate both.
Huge congratulations to the entire team involved in this production, you all deserve respect and admiration for it.
