Sweet concept but the best actor of the entire cast was the dog. Fake emotion, flat effect, the grieving process depicted was totally unrealistic, the grieving man's boss and relatives were oddly cold and unsupportive, and there was no chemistry in the love interest plot! Totally predictable and formulaic, lousy acting and terrible script.

This is real life, folks. .. not a glitzy Hollywood film which is why the professional critics rated it so low. They'd rather see an incredibly violent or cynical drama or some stupid superhero sequel. It's not easy to sit through because it's grim and gritty but it gives you a glimpse into the world of convicts trying to reestablish themselves and their backstories , which are often heartbreaking. It requires patience, sensitivity and empathy to enjoy this film, but the ending is worth it. And there are many poignant moments among the ensemble cast. Sandra Bullock is phenomenal. The pain she can convey in her stoic face without any words is chilling. As a social worker for many years, I was very moved by this story and all the performances.

Unique, quirky, hilarious, heartfelt and eventually sweet. Gervais does a remarkable acting job of portraying the nuances of grief in a complex character who is hilarious, touching and outrageously obnoxious. It's also enhanced by a steady parade of delightful eccentric characters throughout his life and the subjects of a small town newspaper he works for.
