I admit, I did not make the conscious choice to watch this movie when my partner nor did I know much about the hype beforehand.
This movie is such a contrived self-indulgent "what am I doing with my life" portrayal of a privileged married couple with child who weirdly haven't seemed to have made an effort to actually work stuff out before deciding to split their family coast to coast because neither can reconcile the needs of the other's professional life. Not once has it been exposed that they actually tried to bring up grievances and grow beyond them.
Perhaps this movie is entertaining to those who can't understand how to communicate balance and compromise in a relationship. While the scenes are likely to trigger memories to those who've faced divorce, it is played out as learned helplessness from both of them. They seem to also have learned, paradoxically, beforehand how to be horrible to each other (like sabotaging the other's choice of divorce attorney) while clearly having chemistry as a couple. That chemistry in some scenes is probably the only redeeming quality.
Finally, the female characters only ever seem talk about their men(or son), and Adam Driver's character is annoyingly naive/deluded about married life and living in New York or LA etc. Who cares?
