In full disclosure, I reveled in watching the original LOST IN SPACE in the mid-60s, so I doubly loved the cameo of Bill Mumy - the original geeky kid, Will Robinson - at the beginning of the series where he plays the role of the injured (and possibly dying) real Dr. Smith.
While I enjoyed that old series, I'm liking this new version even better.
The action is nonstop and the acting is well done. Parker Posey as the new Dr Smith is wickedly good in her maniacal and never-ending manipulations, yet the other cast members are endearing, as well. Over the first couple of episodes, I wasn't sure about the authenticity of some of the roles. I mean, Judy at all of 18 or so is now a fully trained doctor? That's a bit of leap, yet by the 3rd or 4th episode the storyline allowed her character to develop more fully, so much so that my skepticism of her being a medical doctor at such a young age seemed to fade in the distance.
Speaking of young, I think Maxwell Jenkins does a masterful job playing Will Robinson. Like his sister Judy, his education and intelligence are a bit hard to swallow at first, yet Maxwell deftly shows his character's flawed sense of innocence and self-doubt. He really is a gifted actor in this regard.
I also very much like Ignacio Serricchio as Don West. I like how this series has built don West as a very flawed, materialistic character, but a much needed one for his mechanic skills. He, too, grows on you. Bottom-line, the casting director deserves major kudos for doing their job really well!
There are gaps in the storyline, especially from episode to episode. Mostly, it appears the director makes some assumptions for the viewers to catch-up in the storyline. Others who are more nitnoid about such gaps may express their displeasure. As for me, I'm OK with it as there is truly a whole universe before the Robinsons (and Don West and Dr Smith) to explore. Tempus fugit!
