I wanted to love this book. While it was said that Long Island could be read as a stand alone book, I felt reading Brooklyn first gave me the motivation I needed to see it through. To begin with, the characters as they are presented in Long Island lacked the depth that was developed in the earlier book. Additionally, I just couldn’t like any of the characters despite once being endearing to some of them.
What I did like was how the novel showed the unpredictability of life; how nothing is truly black or white or quickly resolved. I liked how consideration needed to made about the context of time and the social roles everyone was expected to take.
I want more resolution. I want more acknowledgement of what wasn’t said.
With that being said I would recommend this book but not as a stand alone….read Brooklyn first.
