Possibly the worst book to show adaptation ever. If you read the books, do not bother watching. It’s understandable changes must be made, especially when a series is only 6 episodes, but the changes were nonsensical and a detriment to the thriller/suspense aspect of the book. This show undermines some of the best characters and rushes to an ending with no clues, no foreshadowing, ultimately turning a fantastic YA mystery into some kind of warped fanfiction.
Spoilers/questions I genuinely need answered:
1. Why does Victor call Pip “chicken” instead of “pickle”? I honestly need to know.
2. What is the point of Pip thinking Victor cheated on her mom? What does this add? This is never explained.
3. Why is Andie not developed into the bully, a vital component to the plot? In the show, she’s just a victim that deals drugs for no apparent reason.
4. Why is Nat de Silva best friends with Andie and not the victim of Andie’s selfishness, another huge plot point?
5. Why is it never brought up that Jason Bell is an abuser until the very end?
6. Why does Pip do nearly zero investigative work and is essentially minimized to a nosy teen who just gets lucky?
7. Why does Elliot Ward appear to lock Pip in the attic with the fake Andie, only for her to suddenly be freed? It is never clear he cares about his daughters, and he knowingly held the wrong girl captive? For what reason? He also only leaves on threatening note? Again. Zero suspense.
8. For what purpose does Ravi randomly decide he needs to leave? He had already admitted to liking Pip…
9. How does the family not realize Barney is missing for the whole birthday party? Why change this?
10. Why does the show never unfold Pip’s investigation or suspect list? How do they ever expect to continue the series?
I could go on….
