This book is really hard to stomach even for a Sussex Fan. I picked it up out of disdain for British tabloids and how they’ve treated the Duchess. I have been a huge fan of Rachel, Meghan’s “Suits” character, for a long time. When I saw how she was presented in the media I felt nothing but disgust. I was eager to hear the other side of the story and finally an opportunity for someone to tackle the racist, xenophobic sentiments that the Tabloids perpetuate. This book offers none of that. Instead it’s a Disney love story on steroids with a princess that’s sadly nothing but perfect. Every situation described in the book is an opportunity to glorify Meghan and oddly… to namedrop!
Her portrayal is unrelatable and contradictory at times making it impossible to learn who she really is. “With girls on Deal or No Deal she kept to herself and said no to parties, but was nevertheless very popular. With Harry she was having shots at London clubs and was an extrovert”. This book saddened me: instead of the real issues and struggles it over-hypes the couple’s virtues, which are often a huge stretch. It makes me think that introducing this puffed up image was an attempt to take control over the media narrative. Is that what’s really important here?
