This book is so cringy... It is full of unlikable and immature characters. The beginning was engaging and covered an important racial issue. That’s the only good thing I can say about it. Emira (the main character) is bland. She whines about not having money and working for a rich white woman while she makes $32 an hour under the table for part time work (21 hours a week) as a babysitter AND buys expensive things like $200 jackets. Her employer, Alix, is unhealthily obsessive about, well, everything (Emira’s approval, her past with Kelley, what everyone thinks of her, etc.). Kelley (Emira’s boyfriend) blames Alix for ruining his best friend’s reputation because she called the cops on trespassers in high school and his friend was caught and arrested for trespassing, being drunk and possessing cocaine. No one in this book takes responsibility for their own choices or actions. There are random awkward sexual moments thrown in that are clumsy and cringeworthy. Nothing about this story is believable or engaging. Quite frankly, it is vapid. I am shocked that anyone enjoyed this book, never mind that it was so highly recommended. It seems like the book started with an important mission and idea that then quickly faded into a soap opera. I cannot believe that these characters are between the ages of 25-35 because their actions, words, and choices resemble those of high schoolers. Save your time and open up a different book.
