This may actually be harmful. There's some kind of muddled vision going on. I suspect someone involved in the project wanted to draw parallels between the cult and modern American suburban life with both communities seeing women and girls as ultimately ancillary to men and their lives and agendas. Maybe the book leans this way?
But tragically someone with the power of final edits has got some serious woman-hating rage to deal with, and WHO WANTS TO DEAL WITH THAT?
Seriously that's not a creative twist. That's psychosis. Get some therapy.
