This is a story of recent American history, so recent, so lovely, but overall rather uncomfortable. It is a story of prejudices and hatred, but also of tolerance and love. It is a story of minutia, and also of major issues. It is a gentle story which gradually builds to challenge the reader's own ideas and dispositions.
The story develops from a series of separate short entries. Each helps to build the nostalgia. But the main story (there are several) flows from each of the separate entries. This is an easy and enjoyable book to read. The reader is left might be challenged about their own pre-conceptions, but overall rewarded. No-one should be put of off reading this masterpiece - it - is a delight.
Echoes of Harper Lee and John Steinbeck (my favourites), but uniquely different. I loved it - among the best 10 books have ever read.
