Trying best to separate this iteration of Tolkien's work from the ones adapted by Peter Jackson. It claims to be a new take on Tolkien's work, so we can try to look at it as such. With so much material to work with they chose to tell a story that we've seen too many times before, which isn't always bad when our characters feel sincere. The series doesn't feel like a world that existed but instead a world that needs to convince the viewers it's importance. It lacks a sense of history and each race are as of now just of generic fantasy characters that lack depth. Characters we care about are flawed and often have an internal struggle between love and their sense of duty, not just light and darkness. If we can see this development in this series, then there is hope. It needs to be seen and not explained. We want to feel those emotions that connect us to any character. If not, then there is no connection to them, or to the story. Tolkien made us care and love his world and everything in it and it reached millions of people. If the sole purpose of a series is to just entertain and gain success, it will fail to connect with people. Trust the viewers to be more than just numbers. Tell us stories like Tolkien did. Stories we can continue to tell years later rather than the just be the latest hit of the year.
