The unrealistic sweetness and false camaraderie made my teeth ache. My favorite character was the dead mother. All of the living female characters were unrealistically beautiful and obliging, like Stepford wives. It was a fairytale -- and I don't care that it was "based on a true story" -- without the mystery and charm of a fairytale.
Had I looked at reviews, I could have easily persuaded my sophisticated old mother to let me take her to see another film, maybe a revival of "The Island of Dr. Whatshisname."
