The character Mare is the epicenter of what will go wrong, does go wrong, and ultimately has gone wrong. The viewer is taken down a psychological trail of Sybil-ism. When you feel just comfortable with Mare, she opens another personality trait your not prepared for. Astonishingly, you welcome it. And you embrace the supporting characters that equally all need to be in deep psychotherapy. Calling the cast a bunch of dysfunctional misfits is an understatement. But they carry the story of Easttown down the perfect rabbit hole with intensity and virtuosity.
