1991. Nirvana. That’s when I learned Dave Grohls name.
Years later, I would see him perform to perhaps 200 people at a pop-up gig in Sydney. It was my lunch break and it was 2001. He was now the Foo Fighters.
I never listened to their music, however I knew the hits as during the late 90’s I worked for a cable tv channel in the graphics department. In the corner of the room was a TV perpetually playing the music channel. The Foo Fighters were played.
Suddenly it was 2023. A friend asked ‘do you wanna see the Foo Fighters?’. As someone who tries to see as many iconic bands perform as possible, I had to say yes.
To say Dave ‘rocked it’ that night in front of 70,000 people is an understatement. In those two hours, Dave Grohl went from a name I knew, to an instant legend in my eyes. His love of life, music, and the people around him (including the 70,000 strangers), was blatantly obvious to see.
Talking after the concert my wife said to me, “I’ve got his autobiography somewhere, I’ll find it”.
A week later, retrieving the shopping from our boot, there it was. Two days later, I turned the last page.
To say Dave has inspired me heavily in the handful of days since seeing him perform and reading his book is an understatement.
His life is one of determination, commitment, gratuity, music, individuality. But above all else - Love.
What a man. What a story. What a life.
I’m so thankful his blip on my radar appeared while he’s still here and still rocking it big-time.
