I went into the series not expecting much, but it is so so good, maybe there’s one episode that was hard going but the series as a whole resonated with me on so many levels. The Chinese mythology aspect is so well managed mostly (did find that heavenly party a little cringe and slow, wish they didn’t modernized it into an award party so the gods are more respectable and believable), having grew up being very familiar with the original literature and many adaptations of journey to the west (1995 A Chinese Odyssey being one the best), I feel this series really honored it in a really deep and authentic way and yet still making it their own. The Asian racial experience told in such a subtle way moved me in a profound way that I was not expecting. Really there needs to be a second season for this series to continue to tell these cultural stories.

At a quick glance, this is a simple linear love story with great visuals. On a deeper second look, every decision made was carefully considered symbolims of cosmic love. I have not enjoyed a movie quite like this for a while. It was subtle traditional storytelling that hits all the right places and continues to unravel after the movie ends. Well worth the watch and will occupy my mind space for some time!
