I am a die-hard fan of the original. I really felt like this movie was made with love, honoring the 1961 version. It kept all its integrity, only adding depth, dialogue and storyline to the plot we know and love. It answered questions we might have had if we thought about the potential background between songs. What was Bernardo and Anita's relationship like? Did they have history together? Why were Tony and Maria so close? Did they ever get a chance to discuss the differences between their cultural difficulties? Where did Chino get the gun? The larger budget allowed an opportunity for larger/different sets and geographical expansion. Only 2 songs were changed as far as their chronological location in the story and only one was very different from the original in who sang it and it was worth it for the message. This was a great tribute.
