Invasion is a mixed bag. The entire premise is compelling - and some of the acting is genuinely transcendent. Still, it does not come together very well ultimately - even if your expectations have been set. To be clear, this is neither a traditional sci-if series, nor is it a typical drama. I appreciate that the writers are making an attempt at a psychological thriller or drama. Unfortunately, it takes a very good and compelling premise - exploring how people will cope or survive in catastrophe - and stretches it out inordinately. I find the character struggles compelling, especially in light of their diverse situations. Still, telling the story to this detail over multiple episodes becomes repetitive and begins to ring hollow. Essentially, the storylines overstay their welcome, and the series begins to become somewhat monotonous. All of that said, the performance put forward by many of the actors is really impressive. Golshifteh Farahani, for example really sells her role, creating the compelling character of a mother who is simultaneously struggling with marriage issues and a global catastrophe. She successfully portrays the struggle and the emotions. She also shines as a person of strength that rises above all else to protect her children. I could recommend this to people who are open to a psychologically and emotionally challenging series, but caution that it may become repetitive. If youโre looking for a sci-fi or action oriented series, look elsewhere. If youโre looking for escape - Iโd also say the same. In fact, it may evoke feelings of helplessness that have become a little too familiar in our present world, where we are struggling with a world-altering pandemic.
