This movie was underwhelming. It was recommended to me by a friend whilst discussing theology and religion and i thought it would more stimulating, but i feel like it was overall a shallow half baked attempt at what could have been a very great movie.
The horror aspect was a bit lacking (as a scaredy cat) which is unfortunate because it feels like the entire point of the film. The religious setting seems to be more of a mood setter and as other reviewers said, it isn't anything new or revolutionary. It's regurgitated talking points and ideas that don't exactly offer a new innovative perspective to most people so i don't necessarily believe the entire point of the movie was to be a monologue about how religions are fake etc. And that leads me to believe that the point was that its a horror movie first, theology and religion after. To be fair, a lot of scenes were executed nicely especially due to the phenomenal acting job by the three leads such as the blueberry pie candle scene. and then it starts losing steam by the second half, leaving you dissatisfied by the end.
Overall, the acting and cinematography are great! however, when it comes to plot and script, it leaves something to be desired. It can be funny at times, intriguing at others and boring during the rest. I will say that i am happy that a movie like this was made despite its shortcomings as it could inspire more in depth conversations about religion in media and possibly persuade someone to rethink their beliefs (although i don't think it was clever enough to be effective).
It tried to be too many things at once but didn't succeed and that's ok, it was still a good watch and i appreciated the twist of changing the main protagonist halfway through.
Lastly, to any reviewers putting 1 stars even if they did enjoy some parts of it, you don't have to be hyperbolic. it's a rating system, not a like (5 stars) or dislike (1 star) system. And to the religious people finding this offensive and disapproving of its existence, that's the point! you're supposed to think about it and develop an opinion but do try to keep an open mind and not just hate it for the simple fact that it doesn't coddle you and cater to your beliefs.
